To the Editor:

I admire Bill de Blasio, the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York, for speaking openly — if reluctantly — about the suicide of his father, who had late-stage cancer ("De Blasio Addresses Ailing Father's Suicide in '70s," news article, Oct. 1).

The legacy of suicide is difficult and complicated for those of us whose loved ones have killed themselves, whatever the reason. We can begin to erase the stigma and shame that surround suicide only by letting go of the silence, and let the many others out there know that they are not alone in their grief and pain.
