As an author, advice columnist and mother of daughters, I applaud Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's good intentions with the NYC Girls Project ("City Unveils Campaign to Improve Girls' Self-Esteem," news article, Oct. 1). Yet it doesn't feel quite right. We would never put up posters that say, "BOY: I'm handsome the way I am."
And while it's lovely to think that everyone is beautiful the way she is, too many Americans of all ages are dangerously overweight. To the adults among us: Keep modeling healthy habits. To the kids: Feel good about yourselves, sure, but stay active, get more sleep, drink water, not sugary soda, and strive to be your best selves.
I mean, we're all works in progress, aren't we?

To the Editor:
It is Oct. 4, Day 4 of the NYC Girls Project, and I am on an uptown No. 1 train headed toward Times Square. A young girl, perhaps 6 or 7 years old, sits opposite me. She spies a poster, apparently over my head. An early reader, she works with her mother to make out the words, ending with "I'm beautiful the way I am." Turning to her mother, she exclaims in delight, "That's me!"
Stunned and happy, her mother wraps her in a hug. "Yes, that is you." Mother and I exchange smiles and laughs. "It worked," she says. Indeed it did. Kudos to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the others behind this inspired campaign.
