The first in a series of editorials on reforming math and science education noted that the number of students pursuing engineering or computer science jobs is plummeting as the need for those workers is soaring. Nearly 90 percent of high school graduates say they're not interested in STEM — science, technology, engineering and math – largely because classes in those fields are dull, curriculums are outdated and teachers are ill-prepared. The number of women and minorities pursuing these fields is particularly bleak.
Greater resources would help. But how else can STEM be made more interesting and attractive to young people?
