The civil war in Syria has killed tens of thousands and the chaos has allowed the Islamic State to rise as a dominant force from the splintered rebel resistance both there and in Iraq. Much of the rich heritage of Syria has also been destroyed in shelling or deliberately by the Islamic State, and some argue that the antiquities looted from archaeological sites and museums are helping to finance ISIS and other militant groups, as well as the government of Bashar al-Assad.
