Re "The Cancer Lobby," by Nicholas D. Kristof (column, Oct. 7): The American Chemistry Council supports science-based efforts to promote the safe use of chemicals. That is why we have been concerned with recent decisions that raise questions about the scientific integrity of the National Toxicology Program's Report on Carcinogens.
For example, formaldehyde, a naturally occurring chemical that is created in our bodies and is found in human breath, was recently classified as "known to be a human carcinogen" in the report despite a National Academy of Sciences report that strongly questioned the science supporting that classification. Assessments like these can cause unwarranted alarm and product de-selection, putting jobs at risk.
Understanding that, Congress took bipartisan action, signed by President Obama, to have the National Academy of Sciences conduct a scientific peer review.
Rather than continue to produce flawed reports, the review should be completed and improvements made before future carcinogen evaluations are published so that the American people can have confidence in the conclusions.
