To the Editor:

Re "Before a Test, a Poverty of Words," by Ginia Bellafante (Big City column, Oct. 7):

Long before children start pre-K, their pediatricians can be the best advocates to help parents in underserved communities understand the value of exposing their children to language.

Many of them are already taking on the task through the Reach Out and Read program, which helps doctors provide age-appropriate books to children and literacy guidance to parents, with strong encouragement to read aloud daily with their children.

More investment in programs like these — that can reach parents when their children are as young as 6 months old — would make a huge difference in helping children get the language exposure they need to succeed.
