To the Editor:
Re "The Land of the Binge," by Frank Bruni (column, Feb. 10):
We need the high emotion and fidelity to first principles of our extremists, or purists, as Democrats call the far-left minority in their party. Politics would be very dull without them. How would we stay awake?
I doubt, however, that they make up any larger percentage of the whole than they ever have. They just have bigger megaphones.
Before the Internet, their only public forum was a family gathering or dinner party with friends. Their letters to the press were too angry, and too long, to pass muster with editors looking for a calm debate that fit the allotted column inches. Now they have the blogosphere, and what's not to love — a huge audience and unlimited space.
God bless them, every one, but noisy doesn't equal numerous. We moderates are still very much in the majority.
