"U.S. Releases New Rules for School Snack Foods" (news article, Feb. 2) reports that federal snack standards will soon be finalized. These rules will create important minimums for nutrition and promote healthy choices in snack foods. This is how the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is affecting children's nutrition.
But now is not time to celebrate. These rules represent only a first step, and advocates must continue at the state and local level to build upon these federal minimums. The Campaign for Healthy Kids is supporting health advocates around the country in promoting locally relevant policies that build upon the federal rules. For example, Tennessee advocates are seeking to eliminate sales tax on healthy vending machine snacks, and a Texas health coalition wants to provide specific guidelines to school districts as they craft their wellness policies.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act has opened the door for change, and local advocates need to move forward.
