Re "To Curb Suits, City Now Opts to Fight Them" (front page, Feb. 26):

In 2012, New York City spent over $500 million on litigation — compare that with Chicago's litigation costs of roughly $65 million in the same year. One reason for the difference is that in 2009, Chicago made the decision to fight weak cases, rather than settle them, and the effects were immediate. In the first year after the change, Chicago saw a 47 percent decrease in lawsuits against the police department and millions in savings for slip-and-fall lawsuits.

Based on the experience in Chicago, it is no surprise that the Bloomberg administration has decided to defend itself against lawsuits rather than settle them. Opportunistic litigation will be reduced, saving taxpayer dollars and freeing up resources for those with legitimate cases. This policy may be costly at first, but New York City will surely reap the benefits of this approach in the future.
