Re "9/11 Remains Still Found, and Sought," by Jim Dwyer (About New York column, April 5):
My husband, Kenneth Van Auken, was killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
Learning early on that it might take a little time to get any of his remains recovered from the World Trade Center site, we had a memorial service for him on Sept. 20, 2001, instead of a funeral.
It has now been almost 12 years since Ken died. We have still never received any of his remains. The City of New York may have some, but city officials don't seem to think that time is of the essence in this matter.
In fact, they have knowingly had some body parts of 9/11 victims sitting in a truck, under a tarp, at a landfill, untouched and unidentified for the last two years.
The possibility of receiving my husband's remains after almost 12 years is unsettling, but I still don't know if this latest find will yield any or not. I am writing this at 2 a.m., no longer able to sleep, as the thought of finally making a funeral for Ken after all these years is opening up old wounds once again.
Worse yet, the thought that any part of him has been lying for years at a garbage dump is utterly ghoulish. This is not the first time a cache of 9/11 remains has been found by the city, and I fear that it will not be the last.
No rush, New York City; perhaps you will get to it within the next decade or two.
