Re "Tennessee Race for Medicaid: Dial Fast and Try, Try Again" (front page, March 25):

As a retired administrative hearing officer for the Illinois Department of Human Services, I am disturbed, but not surprised, by the extraordinary lengths to which medically needy Tennesseans have to go in their quest to secure Medicaid.

Many people who appeared before me had filed appeals to contest the denial of their applications for the program because they did not meet the stringent criteria for disability according to the Social Security guidelines, although most did have chronic conditions for which they needed treatment.

Those who use the word "entitlement" with derision ought to put themselves momentarily in the shoes of people like Ida Gordon, whose need for medical coverage is described in the article. Perhaps they should ask themselves why someone like Ms. Gordon and the uninsured millions like her should not be entitled to affordable health care.
