To the Editor:

Re "Stormy Relationship, Forgiving Followers" (Arts pages, April 29), about the pop star Rihanna and her relationship with the singer Chris Brown:

How can a woman trust a man who brutally beat her? The memory remains, even years later. She could forever be influenced in how she acts or what she says for fear he might batter her again.

As a psychologist who counsels abused women, I understand how complex domestic violence is and how it can affect a person's physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Education is the key to intervention and prevention of abuse. The need for safety is as deep or even deeper than the need to love and be loved. We all deserve relationships filled with dignity and respect. No one is free until all are free from domestic violence.
