Re "Argentina, Once Known as the King of Beef, Falls From Its Throne" (news article, June 14):
Argentina's love affair with beef is not ending anytime soon, but the growing vegetarian movement deserves more attention. The Argentine Vegetarian Union was founded in 2000, and the Internet connects people to meat alternatives like never before. But those who do become vegetarian face sharp criticism and concern — often driven by the ill-founded belief that beef is necessary for good health.
The pro-meat policies in Argentina raise serious concerns — and should also remind us in the United States to look more closely at our food policies. Our world's population is rapidly rising, and livestock production directly contributes to climate change. Reducing meat consumption with vegetarian days or by allowing the true price of meat to show up on supermarket shelves might ruffle some feathers at first, but it is part of a more sustainable future for us all. Governments around the world should get on board.
