Re "A Rite of Passage for French Students Receives a Poor Grade" (Paris Journal, June 28):

As a Frenchwoman and a New York University professor whose children received their baccalauréats at the Lycée Français de New York, I would argue that if French education has problems, the "bac," the test for a high school diploma, is the least of them.

Yes, it is organized by a centralized Ministry of Education with a big budget, as it should be in a democracy. But the bac is a far more egalitarian and less arbitrary criterion for admission to college than the American model.

Given the heterogeneous nature of applications often compiled with external help, American universities rely heavily on the SAT, a much less comprehensive measure of knowledge, often prepared for by students (at a heavy financial cost) outside school. The SAT assesses rapid responses, whereas the bac compels candidates to develop ideas.

Indeed, the bac needs to evolve. But "Vive le bac!"
