Re "O Say, Can You Sing at the Ballpark? It's a Tough Song" (Arts pages, July 4):

I have long lamented that the national anthem has been turned into a solo star performance, as people just silently listen and then cheer or jeer afterward. I am old enough to remember going to ballgames when everyone sang it, which is as it should be.

Is it tough to sing? Of course it is, but I know that we used to sing it as best we could because it is our anthem and we should not surrender it as fit only for those who wish to do a star turn.
