"The Decline of North Carolina" (editorial, July 10) was right on target. Conservatives are now fully in control of my state. They have been trying to decrease voting rights, and increase executions, among other things. I hope that your editorial board keeps an eye on my state to see what happens next.

To the Editor:
Your editorial should be held up as a warning of what will happen to the entire country if Republicans gain control of the presidency and the Senate, while retaining the House.
In North Carolina, the full agenda of the G.O.P. has been revealed. This can very well happen on a national level, ruining much of American life. With more tax cuts that affect the rich, along with drastic cuts in assistance to those in need, we will see what amounts to all-out theft.
We shouldn't say, "It can't happen here," because we are close to seeing it a reality.

Accurately stated, North Carolina was once considered a beacon of farsightedness in the South. I grew up in North Carolina, graduated from one of its finest universities (the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), and even taught in one of its best high schools.
I've often thought of returning to the Old North State for retirement, but it's not the home state I remember since the Republican takeover. It's true: the state government has become a demolition derby. Dismantling its excellent educational system, banning gay marriage and refusing to expand Medicaid to the most needy is alarming. As Thomas Wolfe, a North Carolina native son, wrote, "you can't go home again."
