To the Editor:

The grass-roots campaign challenging the New York Police Department's stop-and-frisk policy began well before the 2011 meeting described in "As Critics United, Stalled Battle Against Frisking Tactic Took Off" (front page, Aug. 14). Rather, it was the culmination of a decades-long effort by activists to demand police accountability.

These activists built community awareness, grass-roots leadership and political strategy, and they relied upon the support of hundreds of small donors, who invested in their work long before it began making headlines.

Social justice movements like this one don't happen in a moment. They flourish when there is long-term investment in their success.
