"The Hype Over Hospital Rankings" (news analysis, Sunday Review, July 28) details some of the pitfalls that can occur when trying to evaluate medical care. We agree that rating hospitals accurately is extremely complicated.

The American College of Cardiology's National Cardiovascular Data Registry has been collecting and analyzing clinical data and providing feedback and support for quality improvement programs for more than 13 years.

Successes include a national program that has reduced the time it takes patients suffering a heart attack to be treated with angioplasty, an improvement that is known to save heart muscle and lives.

When it came time to make our registry data available to the public, we considered several options and decided to collaborate with Medicare's Hospital Compare Web site, which consolidates information from a variety of data sources in a useful format searchable by ZIP code without a lot of hype.
