Re "Amazon's Founder to Buy The Washington Post" (front page, Aug. 6):
How sad that The Washington Post is being sold, which may signal the demise of the first-rate journalism and worldwide respect for a newspaper that has been an integral part of American history. While I understand the dire economic situation facing the Graham family and The Post, one can only surmise that the sale will not bring anything good for the reader.
This takeover of The Post by Jeffrey P. Bezos, the owner of one of the largest international corporations, does not bode well for independent, serious journalism. Big business and mass sales do not guarantee thoughtful and trusted news.

To the Editor:
Far from being the demise of a great newspaper, Jeffrey P. Bezos's purchase of The Washington Post will demonstrate how newspapers can be saved and made relevant into the 21st century.
What is clear is that electronic media and the Internet have overshadowed traditional print media. For newspapers to remain relevant — and they surely are — they must learn to be as vibrant on the Internet as they were on newsstands.
Mr. Bezos has the remarkable vision that transformed traditional bookstores and other retailers into Web-based businesses. He undoubtedly has the capability to ensure a great newspaper's success on the Web. This news may be regarded 50 years from now as the day that newspapers were saved as an institution.
