Re "I Am TOM. I Like to TYPE. Hear That?," by Tom Hanks (Sunday Review, Aug. 4):

Years ago I took part in a guided tour of the Tate Modern in London. As we stood before a giant sculpture, I was surprised when the docent asked if anyone knew what the sculpture was, because it was as quotidian an object as a pencil or a pen.

I was even more surprised when mine was the only hand that went up. It was only then that I noticed how much older I was than the other tour members, which explains why I was the only one who recognized the thin pink disk, flat metal band and beautifully arched bristles of a typewriter eraser.
