"A Straphangers' Campaign" ("The Next Mayor" series, editorial, July 29) appropriately emphasized the importance of New York's transportation system. However, that system is one of the worst in the country in meeting the needs of our elderly and disabled population.
Over 80 percent of subway stations are not accessible to people who use wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility devices. Only 231 out of more than 13,000 taxicabs are accessible. This is the direct result of policies of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's administration, and it does not look as if any of the present candidates will improve anything.
Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker and mayoral candidate, has been particularly hostile to disabled people, having recently killed the accessible taxicab bill in the City Council. A world-class city deserves a world-class transportation system. That is not possible so long as the needs of our disabled tourists, veterans with disabilities and elderly residents are neglected.
