"Japan's Nuclear Refugees, Still Stuck in Limbo" (Namie Journal, front page, Oct. 2) brings long-overdue attention to the suffering of Fukushima evacuees.
Through the dozens of mental health and recovery programs AmeriCares supports in northeastern Japan, we meet evacuees who are stressed and frightened. Living in temporary communities, the evacuees have few opportunities to form new social networks, share experiences and coping skills, and preserve centuries-old traditions.
To help combat feelings of isolation and loneliness that can lead to depression and suicide, AmeriCares is working with local groups in Fukushima to provide support for thousands of disaster survivors.
While the future for those displaced by the continuing radiation disaster is unknown, we must improve the present for those stranded and isolated in temporary housing with no idea of when or if they can return home.
