"Keep Farmland for Farmers," by Lindsey Lusher Shute and Benjamin Shute (Op-Ed, Oct. 1), highlights the critical need to save farmland near cities from real estate development while ensuring that it stays in active farming.
A new report by American Farmland Trust found that 96 percent of farms protected with public money remain in active farming today and that 84 percent of farmland owners who sold easements are reinvesting this money to strengthen their farm's future by upgrading farm equipment, constructing new farm buildings and other means.
Publicly financed farmland protection programs are one of the best ways to help farmers operating near cities to stay in active production. We hope that Congress and President Obama heed this call for more attention to keeping farmland affordable for the next generation and allocating public money to protect this irreplaceable resource permanently.
The expiration of the federal farm bill on Sept. 30 puts such efforts at grave risk.
