It is understandable that the National Security Agency is playing a very delicate public relations game after the recent surveillance revelations in documents released by Edward J. Snowden, the former agency contractor ("N.S.A. Leaks Make Plan for Cyberdefense Unlikely," news article, Aug. 13). But it is vitally important that the Snowden debacle not hinder initiatives to protect critical infrastructure in the United States.

The dangers from cyberattacks have not abated simply because we are squeamish about the security agency's monitoring practices. America's hesitancy to increase defensive and offensive cybercapabilities could lead to a crippling cyberattack that brings down financial systems, air traffic control or water and power supplies.

The digital world has become a domain where strategic advantage can be lost or won in a short time frame. Now is not the time for the United States to sleep.
